The Department of Middle and Secondary Education

The Department of Middle and Secondary Education prepares educators and other professionals for teaching, research and leadership in a range of disciplines and concentrations, with a special emphasis on serving the urban environment and ensuring that people from diverse cultural, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds have equal access to meaningful learning opportunities.

Graduates of the department’s master of arts in teaching programs are qualified to work in Georgia as certified teachers in their disciplines, while the department’s master of education and master of science graduates become master teachers and reading specialists. Specialist in education graduates become instructional, curriculum and content specialists as well as school district leaders.

Earn a master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.) if you're interested in teaching secondary English language arts.

We offer a master of education (M.Ed.) for our Literacy Education program that includes the option to obtain a Reading Specialist certification (upgrade from a T4 to a T5). We also offer a master of arts in teaching degree (M.A.T.) for our English to Speakers of Other Languages program (ESOL).
